Homogenization

The potential required mixing of the samples should be done in a special homogenization device in compliance with DIN/DEV 38 402 – A 30.

These devices have a magnetic stirrer with infinitely adjustable regulation.

The speed is properly adjusted if a funnel is formed of about 10 % of the liquid height. For use in a sampling vehicle the construction of two separate units has proven to be efficient. While the bottom part, consisting of the base plate and the magnetic stirrer remains in the vehicle, the upper part (mixing vessel and carrying unit) is brought to the sampling site and filled there.

The sample must be protected from radiation from the sun and other sources of heat and is stirred up to visible mixing however for at least two minutes. The gentle treatment of the sample reduces the ingress of air as well as the outgassing of volatile ingredients. The vessel lids prevent the contamination of the sample by falling particles (e.g. dust, soot).

Reduction

The reduction, i.e. the filling of homogenized liquid into the sample bottles is done with the stirrer in motion and through a drain valve. Sealed bottled cleaned at the laboratory must be used and under no circumstances may they be rinsed with sample water on site.
